Happiness is a By-product.

When was a child, if someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grow up, I would say “Happy”. Yes. I just wanted to be happy. No matter what job I did, where I lived, how much I earned at the end I wanted to be happy. I wanted to cuddle in my bed with a smile. But as years piled in my age, as time passed, as I graduated from a student to employed, as I left my country for another place, the happiness also started blurring. The intensity just reduced. And then one day, I couldn’t even find it. There was not even a trace of her. (Let’s assume Happiness is a woman.)

I searched for her here in heaven and earth, in different countries, in various jobs, between different people, even in food, but I just couldn’t find her. I got tired. I stopped wandering searching for her. But after a while, I found that happiness couldn’t be found anywhere except within you.

I understood that happiness is not a life status. It’s a state of mind. Usually happiness is ephemeral. It lasts just for a short time. It’s because life is a mix of ups and downs. You can’t demand a life full of peaks without expecting a few slopes and gutters. And when you understand  that happiness is not a goal, by is a by product you reach a state of ultimate happiness, where you take everything with positiveness and a grateful heart and also with hope that the next day Sun will shine brighter.

So,

What is happiness for you? Are you happy at the moment?

  1. Happiness is such a vague concept for me. I could launch into a long monologue on this, but won't. Loved the way you put your point across. Very succinct. Good luck with the challenge. :)

  2. It is true that happiness is never found in things and situations. It is mindset. Sooner we realize better it will be. You have great approach towards life! Keep shining!

  3. SO true. Happiness truly lies within....its so good to know that you knew very early own in life that it was happiness that you wanted from life. It took so many years for me to understand this important point of life.

  5. Happiness is ephemeral. Totally unpredictable. Doing exactly the same thing at different occasions can change your mood from extremely ecstatic to down right morbid depression.

  6. I honestly have not been happy this year for a long time but this last month have made an extra effort to change and do things I want to do. And it does feel like a breath of fresh air. As you mentioned, partly it comes down to me changing my own mindset and focusing on the positives. I used to do that in the past but at times, we forget the lessons we preach :)

  9. That's a very profound thought for a child. I used to answer when asked the same question that I want to retire, just skip to that age! To answer your question, to me happiness is to love and be loved by friends and family.

  11. I wanted to be a lot many things when I was a child and I did do a lot of things in life. But today if someone asked me what I want my kids to be, I would have a simple answer, "I want them to be happy. Everything else can wait and be compromised upon."

  12. Beautiful! And its true! Happiness can only be found within us.

  13. Happiness is indeed a state of mind.

But if you ask me what makes me happy, I am absolutely clueless so as to where to put my finger on. Strange but true.

  14. So true Sheethal. Happiness can only be found within. If we can't do that, then nothing else can make us happy!

  16. How true, we generally associate happiness with material things but hardly trust that life's simple things are the biggest source of happiness. Just a thought of I AM HAPPY can motivate the inner spirit.

  17. Happiness is a state of mind and a result of your choices.Loved reading this. The more we spread good news the better it is for us collectively .

  18. The factors affecting happiness keep changing, don't they? Sometimes materialistic things make you happy, sometimes a simple act of kindness. :) Your post made me realize what it is that is making me happy, so huge thanks for that! :)

  19. Ahhh a loaded question. In fact one of my favorite lines is "I lie most about being happy". Am I happy? I would say no. I am very restless and happiness should bring calm, so I would say I am desperately in pursuit of happiness but not achieved it so far. No :)

  20. Happiness is subjective, as you rightly said -It’s a state of mind.
    Stay happy :)

  21. Wonderful post. I agree with you happiness is a state of mind. Its something that totally depends upon us.

  22. I completely agree happiness is a state of mind and you can find happiness in the weirdest of times too.

  23. You are what your thoughts are. I've seen too many miserable people who love being miserable because it brings attention. Assume good things will come your way, and they will!

  24. Happiness definitely is an attitude. I think of my mother in law, nearly 90, with many physical issues. But there is still a lot that can make her happy, because she has opened herself up to the possibility of happiness despite everything happening with her health.

  25. Happiness is not a status, it is a state of mind..loves these lines. And if everyone understand this then everyone will be happy.we have to be content in order to feel happy.

  26. I wonder many times, Why I start seeking happiness in others. If someone says good " I am happy" and if someone said something terrible "I am unhappy" It should not be the case. Thanks for the reminder Sheethal. #BioscopeReads #MyFriendAlexa

  27. Happiness truly comes from within. The pursuit for happiness turns out to be meaningless until we figure out this most important truth. Lovely post!

  28. This is so true. The problem is we keep the locus of our happiness external & thus are never able to remain happy. Thankfully I realized early in life that my happiness lies within me. I would not say that I am always happy now, but yes, if I am unhappy, I know how to turn things around now.

  29. Beautiful message. As you said happiness is a state of mind. But I believe it doesn't come and go. It stays with you. We are aways capable of being happy, it lies within us.

  30. true facts stated, happiness is indeed something we create in our minds, its not a 'place' but a 'place in mind'

  31. Happiness is being busy! I know it sounds weird but I enjoy my me-time and a moment(or an hour!)of peace and quiet only after I know I've done my share of work for the day. That feeling of satisfaction is happiness on a regular day. :)

  32. Sometimes it takes all the effort to try and lift ourselves to a happy state and sometimes, we don't even need to raise our little finger but happiness comes and falls into our lap even before we've known it has! It is this unpredictability of life that makes every turn in life so interesting, don't you think? Loved this post Sheethal.

  33. Very Well said! happiness should not be a status update, it should be a state of mind. Sadly, we look for happiness in all the wrong places whereas it actually lies within al of us.

  34. Happiness is just a perception of mind...great post to read...

  35. I really feel same happiness is state of mind for me happiness means myself reason to be relaxed and do what make me happy

  36. This is so true. Happiness is a state of mind. To me happiness means my Me Time doing nothing and just sitting in the couch or driving the car to my way office.

  37. Happiness is not a by product IMO. It can manifest itself in many forms, nd sometimes, just a relief from an anxious state is happiness, even if it looks nothing like it. Im happy i guess, its never served on platter for you to savour :-)

  38. Yup happiness is within ourselves but we have to go through the entire cycle of getting into buying expensive stuff, travel and what not to return to the heart and figure it that its all here all the time. And yes I am in a happy space today and been here since a while!

    ReplyDelete
  39. This is indeed a very practical take on living life. And happiness cannot be sought outside..It is inside us... Stay positive, happy and keep blogging :)

  42. That's so well put up Sheethal and I can't agree more, it is all in our mind 😊

    ReplyDelete
  43. True.. You just want to be happy and you search for it everywhere except within yourself. I do it all the time

    ReplyDelete
  44. That's beautifully put. I have always wondered as to how people are able to search for happiness as it's generally something which can be defined differently by different people. If you ask 10 different people, they have 10 different meanings of happiness.

  45. May you always have company of this lovely lady.

  46. so well said! Happiness lies within.. and as soon as we realise that it isnt outside or a goal but a way of being, we embrace happiness & joy!

  47. So true! Happiness is indeed stae of mind and it dwells within you. When I am happy , I just talk to myself. Nobody except me can fix inside me. Isn't it ? :)

May you find happiness and everything that you seek.

  48. Happiness come from within is a hit for me

    ReplyDelete
  49. Exactly! Happiness is momentary. It waxes and wanes. I think in our search for that elusive happiness/perfection all the time, we become miserable. As for me, right now I'm not all that happy but that's okay :)

  50. Happiness is not a constant phase but despite ups and down in life positive outlook matters I've positivity in.my life and yes I'm happy
